Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award

Complete your Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering with Harrow Litter Pickers.

Timescales

Bronze Award: 3 months minimum - extra 3 months optional.

Silver Award: 6 months minimum - potentially an extra 6 months if you did not do the Bronze Award.

Gold Award: 12 months minimum - potentially an extra 6 months if you did not do the Silver Award.

For full details, see DofE Timescales.

Frequency

Volunteers need to do an average of one hour per week.

For longer sections at Silver and Gold it can be useful to do an activity for longer but less often.

For example, in a Gold programme lasting 12 or 18 months, you could do one 4-6 hour session of volunteering per month.

You cannot condense an activity to less than 1 session per month and you cannot complete more than 6 hours in a month.

Additional Requirements

Silver Award: Attend 1 group event (the hour(s) spent on this counts towards your monthly total).

Gold Award: Attend 2 group events (the hour(s) spent on this counts towards your monthly total).

What to Do

Please email an update each week with:

A photo of your collection.

A short description of your litter pick.

Your feedback helps us write the final report for your DofE award.

Litter Collection & Bags

Use only purple volunteer bags.

Tie bags securely and leave them beside any Harrow Council public bin for collection.

Extra credit if you:

Sort recyclables into your home blue bin.

Focus on keeping a particular area consistently clean.

Safety Guidance

Please read our Health and Safety advice carefully.

Avoid litter picking in the dark - stick to daylight hours.

Consider going out with a relative, friend, or another volunteer (pairs are encouraged).

If you want to join a Group Event and you are under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult.

Why It Matters

Cleaner areas reduce crime, improve community safety, and protect wildlife.

Removing waste stops plastic and rubbish from entering parks, rivers, and waterways.

Caring is contagious - when others see volunteers making a difference, they are more likely to care too.
